If you wish to work as a disability support worker, you must meet the NDIS requirements. These NDIS requirements may include:
- Complying with the NDIS code of conduct
- Undergoing an NDIS worker screening
- Understanding your obligation through completion of the “Quality, Safety and You” eLearning module
However, there may be more requirements for certain support workers.
NDIS Code Of Conduct For Workers
It is an NDIS compliance requirement that all workers follow the NDIS Code of Conduct. The Code promotes safe and ethical service and applies to both providers and workers.
The Code requires workers to:
- Act with respect for freedom of expression and self-determination
- Respects the privacy of people with disability
- Provide support and services safely, competently and with care
- Act with integrity, honesty, and transparency
- Act on concerns about matters that may impact the quality and safety of supports to people with disability
- Prevent and respond to all forms of violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse
- Take steps to prevent sexual misconduct
Worker Screening Requirements
A Worker Screening Check assesses the risk posed by a person who works, or wishes to work, with people with disability. The check will decide whether a person is cleared or excluded from working with people with a disability.
It is an NDIS requirement that all people who work or wish to work in risk assessed roles undergo a Worker Screening Check. Worker Screening Checks are currently in place in all states and territories.
If you wish to apply for a Worker Screening Check, you will have to apply through a state or territory agency. There will be a fee for applying for a Worker Safety Check.
Worker Orientation Module ‘Quality, Safety And You’
One of the NDIS requirements for support workers is for them to complete the worker orientation module called ‘Quality, Safety, and You’. This module is an online eLearning module that explains the obligations of a worker under the NDIS Code of Conduct. You can find more information about the worker orientation module here.
